Tips for TAKS

Mr. Markert suggests the following tips for students as they prepare for, take, and learn from the TAKS test.

Preparation
  • Remember to study throughout the school year for the TAKS tests you are taking. Parents, monitor your child(ren)'s progress. The TEA (Web site link listed below) offers printable resources for all grade levels.
  • A few weeks before your TAKS testing date, review what you have learned and what you may still need to learn for your TAKS test.
  • The night before your TAKS test, try to get 8+ hours of sleep. Eat a good breakfast before the test; bring a book to read for when you finish.
During the Test
  • REMEMBER: THE TAKS IS NOT A TIMED TEST. You have all day to finish it. Take short breaks to keep yourself energized.
  • If you don't think that you know the answer to a question, skip that question and move on. You might feel better about it when you come back to it.
  • If you get tired or restless, you may want to take a quick bathroom break or close your test booklet and lay your head down. Then return to the test when you feel refreshed.
Learning from the TAKS
  • Besides learning for the TAKS, you can also learn from the TAKS. You may start by reviewing the information your teacher or administration gives you about your test score. If you have questions, discuss them with your parents and teacher.
  • Another part of learning from the TAKS is using your last test score to set a goal for improvement. You can achieve this goal by studying more often or with a friend or family member, by setting a schedule for your study time, or by discussing your goal with your teacher.
  • Lastly, it is important that you READ to learn! A large part of the TAKS test is based on vocabulary skills. Reading more often may not only help you score higher on the TAKS test, but it may improve your academic performance altogether.
